What are Wall Murals?

Can I use my own photography when creating a wall mural?

Through our partnership with Murals Your Way, we can help you create a beautiful wall mural using your own photography or artwork.  You must have a high quality picture to expand it very large. You may also select artwork from the Murals Your Way gallery.

What types of window murals do you have?

There are two types of murals that you may call ?window murals?.  We have window-shaped murals that give the appearance of a window (frame and all) on a blank wall.  We also have window murals that may be installed directly onto window glass.  These are great for apartment dwellers or others who may want to block an undesirable view from a window.  Window murals also look great on doors.

What tools are needed to install a wall mural?

All you need are basic wall covering or wallpapering tools. Each wall mural comes with detailed, easy-to-follow installation instructions. By carefully following some basic steps, you can be enjoying your wallpaper mural in a short period of time.

What type of surfaces can I install my wall mural onto?

The wall should be smooth, and free of irregularities. The ideal surface is an inexpensive flat latex paint on wallboard. If you're unsure of your existing painted wall, we recommend 2 coats of flat latex paint. If the existing paint is a gloss or semi-gloss, use a medium grit sandpaper to roughen it.

What if my wall doesn't have a smooth surface?

If you have a textured wall, a wood-paneled wall, a brick or concrete wall, or any other rough surface, we recommend the installation of a "liner paper," followed by 2 coats of flat latex paint. A liner paper is simply a blank wallpaper which covers irregularities in the wall surface.

Do wall murals require paste?

Many of our wallpaper murals come pre-pasted.  We also have some wall murals that require you to supply your own paste.  Check the product detail information to find out the exact paste requirements.

Do you have paint-by-number wall mural kits?

Yes, Wall Decor Shops stocks paint-by-number wall mural kits that are easy to use.  Just hang the pattern and transfer paper, then trace over the design.  Then follow the numbers and stay in the lines to paint in the correct color.   Additional installation information is available at our Paint-by-Number Installation instruction page.

Can I install a wall mural in a bathroom or other high-humidity area?

Yes, if certain precautions are taken.  The mural should not be hung where water will sit on the mural such as in a shower or besides a sink. After installation, coat the wall mural with a water-based polyurethane (apply several light coats, allowing to dry between each coat) to protect it from moisture. In addition, if you suspect moisture exists behind the wall, an adhesive containing a mildew preventive should be used prior to installing the wallpaper mural.

What if my wall is too small for the mural?

You should always expect to trim some portion of the mural off. Select the part of the mural you want to display and trim to size. See installation instructions for details.

What if my wall is too large for the mural?

Simply center the wall mural on your wall. No special frame is necessary. If you prefer, wood trim such as that found around home interior doors and windows can give the illusion of an opening in the wall. You might find some borders on our website that could be used to frame the mural.

Can I trust the colors I see on my computer screen?

No computer monitor is able to display colors exactly as they will appear on the actual wall mural.  No matter how carefully we select our pictures we cannot guarantee how their color will appear on your monitor. The best way to make decorating decisions is to select the wall mural you like and then choose the colors to decorate with, after the wall mural is up.

How do I clean my wall mural?

Wall murals are printed on heavy-duty poster paper. They can be cleaned (but not scrubbed) with a damp sponge.

How do I remove my wall mural?

When installing, we recommend using a dry cellulose paste (included with most wallpaper murals) or a strippable, clear, non-staining ready-mixed paste. This will allow you to remove the mural for redecorating without damaging the wall.  Don?t forget to shop Wall Decor Shops when you decide to redecorate!
